ADOX CMS 20 II: ultra-detailed black-and-white film for precise images
ADOX CMS 20 II 135/36 is an unusual black-and-white film: slow, almost grain-free, and made for maximum sharpness from a 35mm frame. In ADOX ADOTECH IV it is best treated around ISO 12-20; in standard developers it becomes much harder in contrast and behaves more like a document film.
I would choose it less as an everyday walkaround film and more for subjects where micro-detail matters: architecture, urban graphics, tripod landscapes, product work, reproductions, bright portraits, and controlled-light scenes. With a good lens and careful exposure, it gives a very clean negative that holds up beautifully to large prints and detailed scanning.
Best uses
- Architecture, lines, textures, signage, shop windows, and small typography.
- Landscape and city scenes in good daylight.
- Product photography and reproductions where near-digital precision is useful.
- Soft-light portraits when you want smooth skin and a crisp rendering.
Shooting and development notes
Because the film is slow, it rewards light, accurate metering, and careful technique: fast lenses, bright daylight, or a tripod. Load and store the cassette away from direct light, as the clear base is less forgiving of rough handling. For normal pictorial tonality I recommend ADOTECH IV; a standard black-and-white developer gives a harder, more technical contrast.
