Hanalogital VEINS is an experimental 135 colour film, 36 exposures, ISO 400, C-41 process. It is pre-exposed with reddish stripes — hence the name.
How the picture looks
The stripes sit on top of a normally exposed colour frame. The maker notes that because of how they are applied, their intensity and hue vary from frame to frame and roll to roll: two identical frames are not possible.
What to shoot on it
Work where chance is the point: street, a party, travel, portraits. The calmer and simpler the background, the more clearly the pattern reads. For a job that has to be delivered, this film is the wrong choice.
How to shoot it
An ordinary colour ISO 400: meter at box speed, no compensation. Keep in mind that part of the frame is already taken — do not fill the corners with small detail.
Processing and scanning
Ordinary C-41 at any lab, no special handling. Ask for automatic colour correction to be turned off at the scanning stage, or the red stripes may be partly "fixed" away.
How it compares
Closest are Revolog with their geometric patterns and KONO! with a continuous tint. VEINS differs in that the pattern is uneven and reads as an organic structure rather than a printed grid.
