About the film

Ilford Pan 400 is an ISO 400 black and white negative film from HARMAN technology, the maker of Ilford films, made in England. It is the more affordable film in the Ilford range: a simple, versatile everyday 400. This batch carries the updated emulsion and expires in September 2027.

What it is for

Street, travel, indoor and overcast shooting — wherever ISO 100 runs out. The extra speed lets you shoot handheld at short shutter speeds with the aperture stopped down.

Shooting and developing

Expose at ISO 400. It develops in any standard black and white developer — Ilfosol 3, ID-11, D-76 and the like; take the time from the manufacturer’s chart for your developer. If you would rather not develop it yourself, I develop black and white film in my own lab.

Frequently asked questions

How is Pan 400 different from HP5 Plus?

HP5 Plus is Ilford’s flagship 400 with wide latitude for push processing. Pan 400 is a simpler, more affordable film of the same speed for everyday shooting.

Can I develop it together with other black and white films?

Yes, in the same developer, but the development time depends on the film — use the chart for Pan 400.
