Lucky Color 200 — the return of Chinese colour film

Lucky Color 200 is fresh ISO 200 colour negative film in 120 format, made by Lucky Film in China for standard C-41 processing.

It is not respoolled motion-picture film or another maker’s repackaged emulsion. Lucky C200 is Lucky’s own contemporary colour emulsion, with production resumed after a break of more than a decade.

Lucky Film is one of China’s oldest photographic-material manufacturers, founded in 1958. The company made its own colour films in the last century, but stopped production in 2012 as the market shifted to digital photography. In 2025, Lucky returned with the new Color 200.

What Lucky Color 200 looks like

The film has a distinctly expressive character. Typical traits include:

  • saturated reds and magenta tones;
  • slightly warm colour rendering;
  • fairly high contrast;
  • good sharpness;
  • moderate grain, particularly pleasing in 120 format;
  • a more distinctive image than neutral contemporary consumer films.

In character, Lucky C200 sits somewhere between classic consumer colour film and contemporary experimental emulsions: colours remain recognisable and natural, yet the image has a clearly individual signature.

It is especially interesting for portraits, city photography, travel, landscapes, and subjects with saturated reds, greens, and warm tones.

Exposure

Nominal sensitivity: ISO 200 / 24°.

Lucky Color 200 is designed primarily for daylight. For the most predictable result, expose it close to its nominal ISO 200 rating and avoid heavy underexposure.

In shadows, grain becomes more noticeable with insufficient exposure, so when in doubt it is better to give the film a little more light than to underexpose the frame.

Other emulsions are better suited to long night exposures; Lucky C200’s strength is daytime and everyday photography.

120 format

The number of frames depends on the camera format:

  • 6×4.5 — about 16 frames
  • 6×6 — 12 frames
  • 6×7 — 10 frames
  • 6×9 — 8 frames
