About the film

Svema Foto 200 is a black-and-white 135 film from Shostka, 36 exposures, rated ISO 200. It was good until September 1999 — batch 228, in the yellow box.

What to expect

A quarter of a century past its date, the emulsion picks up base fog: contrast drops, the shadows lift to grey and the grain becomes more visible. How much, nobody can say in advance — it depends on how the film was kept all these years.

Who it is for

Anyone who wants to shoot genuine late-90s Shostka film, for experiments, and for cameras you do not mind spending a roll in.

A practical tip

Leave room for the fog. The usual rule of thumb for expired black-and-white film is about one stop more exposure per decade — so rate it at ISO 25–50 instead of the box speed. Develop it in ordinary black-and-white chemistry.
