Important! This film works in daylight only. Under artificial light — at home, indoors or in a studio — X-ray film does not work: the frames come out blank or nearly blank.
About the film
Medical X-ray film cut down to 120 and wound onto spools with paper backing — it loads into any medium-format camera like ordinary 120 film. Each strip is 40 cm long, about half a regular 120 roll: 5–6 frames at 6×6. Speed: ISO 25–50. Sold as a pack of 10 spools.
Look
X-ray film gives an unusual black-and-white image: high contrast, a distinctive tonal rendering and a slightly mystical feel. The samples in the gallery were shot on it.
Shooting and developing
Expose at ISO 25–50, in daylight only; on an overcast day you will need a tripod. Medical X-ray film usually carries emulsion on both sides and scratches easily, so handle it with care. Develop in an ordinary black-and-white developer in total darkness or under a red safelight. I can develop and scan it for you.
