15 best photoshoot locations in Kyiv — and 117 more in my guide
Where in Kyiv can you shoot frames with character, not just a pretty background? The city offers almost any mood: old Podil, modernist landmarks, academic facades, parks and water. But the address is only part of it — light, angle and how a person interacts with the space matter just as much.
I have put together 15 classic photo locations in Kyiv for portraits, fashion, love stories, street and film photography. Each one comes with a shot idea, light and lens advice, a film tip and a Google Maps link.
If what you need is not tourist spots but commercial locations — malls, business centres, cafés, residential complexes, petrol stations and car parks where fashion and lookbooks are shot — I have collected those in a separate guide: 117 commercial locations in a handy PDF, with map links and sample photos from each location, organised into routes by district.
Important: under martial law, access to some places and photography itself may be restricted. Do not photograph military or restricted sites or critical infrastructure, and stay out of fenced-off or unsafe buildings. Before a commercial or staged shoot, check the management's rules, and plan your route around air-raid alerts, shelters and the curfew.
Architecture and the city: for fashion, street and cinematic portraits
1. Kontraktova Square — the living rhythm of Podil

Where: Podil · Google Maps
Kontraktova is not one spot but a whole set of backgrounds: historic facades, shop windows, open space and the side streets around it. It is easy to shoot a series here that feels like a fragment of city life.
Shot idea: the model walks across the square while people and buildings form the background. Try shooting through a shop window, or keep passers-by moving in the frame.
Light and lens: mornings are quieter; an overcast day makes soft portraits easy. 35 mm captures the atmosphere, 50 mm keeps the focus on the person.
For film: an all-round ISO 400 colour film handles a walk in changing light.
2. Andriivskyi Descent — textures and old Kyiv

Where: Andriivskyi Descent · Google Maps
Cobblestones, old doors, uneven walls and a steep slope give a feel of another era. You do not have to place the model in the middle of the most famous stretch: look at the gateways, steps and small pieces of facade.
Shot idea: a portrait against a textured wall or a silhouette on the steps. Cream, navy and burgundy clothing works beautifully with old plaster.
Light and lens: come early to avoid the crowds. 50–85 mm compresses the perspective; 35 mm keeps more of the city around.
For film: black-and-white film brings out the rhythm of cobbles and shadows.
3. Karaite Kenesa — a striking architectural portrait

Where: 7 Yaroslaviv Val St · Google Maps
The former Karaite kenesa, known as the House of Actors, is one of the most distinctive facades in the centre. Its intricate decoration and monumental silhouette can replace an entire studio set.
Shot idea: a restrained, symmetrical editorial, or a portrait where the model fills a small part of the frame and the architecture tells the rest of the story.
Light and lens: soft daylight shows the detail best. 35 mm for the full view; 85 mm for facade fragments with the model.
Access: this is a listed monument; keep away from unsafe or fenced-off parts.
4. Peizazhna Alley — unusual shapes and playful colour

Where: off Velyka Zhytomyrska St · Google Maps
Mosaics, whimsical sculptures, trees and viewpoints leave room for bold portraits. To avoid an ordinary tourist photo, play on contrast: a simple outfit against a loud background.
Shot idea: a creative portrait with a colour accent, or an autumn series with the sculptures in the foreground.
Light and lens: soft morning or evening light; 35 mm for the setting, 50 mm for portraits. Make sure the background does not fight the clothes.
5. Kyiv Passage — urban gloss

Where: 15 Khreshchatyk St · Google Maps
The rhythm of the facades, the shop windows and the reflections create a fashion-editorial look. Even a small team can shoot a series with a magazine feel here.
Shot idea: the model moving between the facades, a portrait through glass, or a symmetrical wide shot. A few steps often work better than a complicated pose.
Light and lens: cloudy days lower the contrast. 50–85 mm helps crop out stray signs and people.
Access: do not block the passage; shooting inside venues or with large equipment needs permission.
6. Furniture House — modernism for bold fashion

Where: 23 Mykoly Mikhnovskoho Blvd · Google Maps
The sweeping wave of its roof and the rhythm of the structure make this building a backdrop for minimalist fashion. Here you do not decorate the frame — you work with lines and scale.
Shot idea: a model in a sharp suit against a huge architectural form. Leave plenty of negative space, or shoot a black-and-white series.
Light and lens: 24–35 mm conveys the scale, 85 mm isolates rhythmic fragments. Shoot only from areas open to the public.
For film: ISO 400 black-and-white brings out the geometry.
7. The «Saucer» at Lybidska — retro-futurism

Where: 180 Antonovycha St · Google Maps
Kyiv's «Saucer» is one of the city's most recognisable modernist images. Its round shape looks like a set from a science-fiction film.
Shot idea: conceptual fashion with a clean silhouette and a contrasting colour. Place the model in the foreground so the building's shape stays recognisable.
Light and lens: 24–35 mm for the architecture, 50 mm for the portrait. Work from public ground and stay off the closed site.
8. Vernadsky Library — monumental lines

Where: 3 Holosiivskyi Ave · Google Maps
The austere geometry and scale of the building are a good counterpoint to a model's lively expression and movement. It suits restrained portraits and graphic series.
Shot idea: place the person at the edge of the frame and give most of the space to the architecture. Monochrome amplifies the sense of scale.
Light and lens: 35 mm for the wide view, 85 mm for details and compressed perspective. Overcast weather softens the contrast.
Access: shooting inside needs the library's permission.
9. KPI Main Building — academic aesthetics

Where: 37 Beresteiskyi Ave · Google Maps
The Polytechnic's historic building, with its columns, arches and repeating details, suits vintage and dark-academia portraits and quiet love stories.
Shot idea: place the model between architectural lines that lead the eye to the face. For a livelier series, add frames shot on the move.
Light and lens: 35 mm for the columns and scale, 50–85 mm for intimate portraits. Do not shoot where university or security restrictions apply.
10. Golden Gate — warm brick and timber galleries

Where: 40A Volodymyrska St · Google Maps
The reconstruction of the medieval gate — brick, timber galleries and a green rampart — is one of the warmest-coloured backdrops in the centre. Around it lie a small square, benches and the quiet streets of Old Kyiv.
Shot idea: a portrait against the brick wall, or a walk through the square. The warm brick pairs well with cool-toned clothing — blue, grey, green.
Light and lens: evening light warms the brick. 35 mm for the whole structure, 85 mm for a portrait with a piece of the wall.
For film: ISO 200 colour film on a sunny day renders the warm brick beautifully.
Parks and nature: for love stories, film and soft light
11. VDNH — one location, many stories

Where: 1 Akademika Hlushkova Ave · Google Maps
VDNH combines avenues, pavilions, open spaces and seasonal decorations. In one walk you can shoot series with very different moods — from architectural portraits to a romantic story among the trees.
Shot idea: fashion by the pavilions, movement down a long avenue, couple portraits in the greenery.
Light and lens: 35 mm for the setting, 85 mm for soft portraits with blurred leaves. Check VDNH's rules for staged shoots.
12. Hryshko Botanical Garden — flowers, slopes and depth

Where: 1 Sadovo-Botanichna St · Google Maps
People come here for the blossom in spring, the green in summer and the warm leaves in autumn. The terrain and its layers help you build compositions with real depth.
Shot idea: the model among branches with a blurred foreground; a gentle love story or a naturally backlit portrait.
Light and lens: soft morning or evening light, 50–85 mm. Check greenhouse hours and photo-shoot rules on the garden's official website.
13. Feofaniia Park — water, reflections and autumn colour

Where: Akademika Lebedieva St area · Google Maps
Ponds, trees, paths and the soft lines of the landscape make Feofaniia a good choice for romantic portraits. Nature here supports the emotion rather than distracting from it.
Shot idea: the model reflected in the water, a walk along the shore, a portrait through branches.
Light and lens: golden hour gives lovely outlines, overcast weather gentle skin tones. 50 or 85 mm for portraits, 35 mm for a wider landscape. Check the entry fee and shooting rules before you go.
14. Holosiivskyi Park — a forest in the city

Where: Holosiivskyi district · Google Maps
Trees, shade, ponds and the changing colours of the seasons leave room for calm portraits with no buildings in sight. It is especially beautiful in the morning, when light filters through the leaves.
Shot idea: a portrait in a gap between the trees, or an autumn story in muted tones. Ask the model to walk slowly along the path.
Light and lens: 85 mm blurs the background; 35 mm shows the forest around. There is less light under the trees — on film, watch your shutter speed and do not underexpose the face.
For film: ISO 400 helps in the shade.
15. Natalka Park — space, water and air

Where: Obolon embankment · Google Maps
Wide promenades, water, trees and an open horizon suit bright portraits and love stories. You get a sense of space without leaving the city.
Shot idea: a couple walking along the embankment, a portrait lit by light bouncing off the water, a silhouette against the sky.
Light and lens: soft evening light or a cloudy day; 35 mm for the setting, 85 mm for intimate moments. The embankment can be windy — use it to move hair and clothes.
117 commercial locations in a handy PDF, with map links and sample photos from each location
Classic spots are lovely, but fashion, lookbooks and brand content often need something else: glass, concrete, neon, empty car parks. I have collected places like that in the PDF guide «Kyiv — locations».
What's inside:
- 117 commercial locations — malls, business centres, cafés and restaurants, residential complexes, petrol stations, car parks, sports grounds. Among them Cosmo Multimall, UNIT.City, the Olimpiiskyi stadium, KLO petrol stations, Lavina Mall, Forum City Garden, M17, Ocean Plaza and dozens of places that never make it into tourist lists.
- Photos from real shoots at every location — you see how the background looks in a frame, not in a panorama.
- 9 routes by district — from «Olimpiiska / Velyka Vasylkivska» with 34 stops to Podil, the left bank and spots outside the city. Stops are ordered as a walk, and one button opens the whole route in Google Maps.
- Every name links to the spot on the map by its coordinates, not by short links that break over time.
- Bonus: classic Kyiv — the 15 places from this article with shot ideas, light and film tips.
- Three languages: Ukrainian, Russian and English — separate files, 186 pages, about 36 MB. Easy to open on your phone right at the shoot.
Price — 300 UAH. The download link arrives at your email within 24 hours after payment.
Digital goods cannot be returned or exchanged — this is also stated in the shop policy.

A film photoshoot in Kyiv: what to keep in mind
Choose film for the light, not just the colours. A sunny day suits ISO 200 colour film; a walk in changeable weather, ISO 400. In the shade of a park or on a grey day, the extra speed really helps.
Don't rush the frame. On film it pays to pick the background first, check the light on the face, and only then ask the model to move. One considered frame can say more than ten random ones.
Watch your shutter speed. Even when the meter shows enough light, the model's movement or camera shake can ruin sharpness. With a 50 mm lens handheld, aim for 1/125 s or faster; with active movement, faster still.
Use the city as your set. Film renders plaster, brick, glass, leaves and mixed colours particularly well. Let the textures work together with the portrait.
I offer film for shoots like these, as well as developing and scanning, at FilmLabStore.
Two easy routes for a photo walk
Route 1: old Kyiv. Kontraktova Square → Andriivskyi Descent → Peizazhna Alley → Golden Gate. Allow 2–3 hours including the shoot and the climb. Start in the morning, when the streets are quieter.
Route 2: modernism. The «Saucer» at Lybidska → Vernadsky Library → Furniture House. The first two are close together; take transport to the third and leave time to change outfits.
Nine more routes — through commercial locations in different districts — are in the guide.
Questions people often ask before a photoshoot
Where is the best place in Kyiv to shoot film?
For textures and street scenes — Podil and Andriivskyi Descent. For soft colours and portraits — Holosiivskyi Park, VDNH or the Hryshko Botanical Garden.
Where can I do a fashion photoshoot in Kyiv?
For contemporary fashion — the «Saucer», Furniture House and commercial locations such as business centres, malls and car parks; 117 of them are in the «Kyiv — locations» guide. For classic editorial — the Passage, the Golden Gate and the Karaite Kenesa facade.
When is the best time to shoot outdoors?
The nicest light is usually in the first hours after sunrise and before sunset. But an overcast day is no worse: it gives even light for portraits and lets you work longer without harsh shadows.
Can I shoot at malls and business centres?
Outside, from public areas — usually yes. Shooting inside, on a roof or with large equipment needs the management's permission — arrange it in advance.
Finally
The best photo location is not necessarily the most famous one. Sometimes one good facade, soft side light and the right distance to the model are all you need. Save this guide, pick two or three places that fit your idea, and leave time for chance discoveries along the way.
