C-41 colour developer

Description

The first and most important C-41 solution on its own: when the developer runs out before the bleach and fixer, there is no sense in buying the whole kit again.

Why it exhausts first

The colour developer does the hardest work — reducing silver and forming dyes at the same time — and oxidises in air faster than the other solutions. At home it is what decides how many more rolls a kit has left in it.

What is critical

38 °C and the times in the instructions. The colour developer is the one C-41 step where a deviation shifts colour balance and density directly; bleach and fixer are far more tolerant.

Questions and answers

How do I know it is spent?

Negatives come out lighter than usual and the orange mask looks pale. If you keep count, go by the yield in the size name.
