Description

A phenidone/glycin developer: fine grain, gentle tonality and an unusually long-lived working solution. One of the most economical formulas in the Soviet tradition.

What makes glycin interesting

Photographic glycin works slowly and very evenly, barely raising contrast. Paired with phenidone it gives enough activity from very little reagent. The negative comes out soft, with open shadows and unburdened highlights — close to what a scanner wants.

A practical note

The solution is long-lived and takes replenishment well. Development is slower than with metol/hydroquinone developers, which is normal for glycin formulas.

Questions and answers

Why are the times so long?

Glycin is a slow developing agent. Do not cut the time short: the slow action is exactly what gives the even tonality.
