A phenidone/hydroquinone universal in high concentrate: diluted 1+4 to 1+9 and used for both paper and film. One bottle instead of two different developers.
Phenidone is active in minute quantities and, unlike metol, rarely causes contact allergy — which is why modern universal developers are built on it. Paired with hydroquinone it develops quickly and gives a deep black on paper.
On paper the strong dilutions do the work, 1+4 to 1+9, in under two minutes. For film, weaker dilutions and longer times; the exact figures depend on the emulsion, so check the manufacturer’s chart.
Which dilution is the stated yield for?
The paper mode. On film, consumption is counted differently — by tank volume, used once.
