
Description
Selenium toning does two things at once: it deepens the black towards a cold purplish note and converts the silver into a far more stable compound. One of the few processes that improves both the look and the life of a print.
What changes in the print
Selenium replaces part of the metallic silver with silver selenide, which is darker and chemically more stable. Maximum density rises, shadows deepen, and the tone shifts cold — as far as plum on some papers. Dilution and time set how far it goes, from barely perceptible to pronounced.
Why it matters for archival work
Silver selenide is far less vulnerable to sulphur, oxidants and airborne pollution than metallic silver. That is why selenium toning is standard practice for prints meant to last decades.
Questions and answers
Do all papers respond the same way?
No. Chlorobromide and warm-tone papers shift further and towards plum; neutral bromide papers change more subtly. Always test on the paper you are actually printing.
