SPUR Speed Major is a liquid concentrate for black and white film, 500 мл, a high-speed and push developer.
What it is for
A developer for when there is not enough light. The maker states its advantage as tone-rich, fine-grained negatives with low base fog even at the highest ratings. That last part is the point: when pushing, it is usually fog that ruins the picture, eating the shadows and leaving the negative muddy. Here it stays in check, so the extra speed is not paid for in grey shadows.
How to dilute it
It is a one-shot developer: mix the working solution, use it, discard it. That is the most predictable way to work — every film is developed in fresh solution, so times need no extending from roll to roll.
Storage
Sealed concentrate keeps well but dislikes air: the emptier the bottle, the faster it oxidises. Decant the remainder into a smaller bottle, or displace the air — that is what gets a concentrate to its last measure.
How it compares
Its neighbour in the SPUR range is TRX 2000, also a speed developer. Against universals like D-76 the difference shows up when pushing: where D-76 gives up fog, Speed Major keeps the shadows clean.
