Standard Developer No. 1 — the paper «normal» of the Soviet formulary. A metol/hydroquinone formula built for domestic papers, ready to use.
The paper counterpart to ST-2: more alkaline and more contrasty, designed around papers such as Unibrom and Bromportret. It works on modern variable-contrast papers too, at slightly higher contrast than D-72.
The yield in the name is per 18×24 cm sheet. In the tray it lasts a session; in a closed bottle, weeks. Grey instead of black, or fog at the edges, means it is time to change it.
Why use it when D-72 exists?
If you print on old Soviet papers, this is the chemistry they were made for. On modern papers the difference is small and the choice comes down to price and habit.
